HERMES SCARF

Design Brief: As part of a class we were asked to design a creative project. The project should embody the issues, ideas, values, and concerns covered in a particular movement or period in this class (Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau,Modernism, Postwar design, etc.). The project may be in any medium of choice.
Art Nouveau was a movement in the visual arts that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. One of the important works of this time was the ‘Job Cigarettes Paper’ poster made by Alphonse Mucha. Mucha was famous for his commercial posters. The densely patterned posters produced by him exemplified the interest in natural forms and decoration during this movement. This particular poster was created as an advertisement for the famous Job cigarette company. This poster was groundbreaking at the time, given the status of women and how they were perceived. It was uncommon to see a woman indulge in an activity like smoking, let alone enjoy it freely. I decided to take this image and add it to an Hermes scarf, keeping some elements of the classic Hermes corners. I chose this object, as Hermes scarves are very carefully handcrafted and have a rich history. Each Hermes scarf is known to tell a story and this particular piece represents a very important time in the Design history. Hermes scarves are also commonly worn by women and so a strong representation like this would be important to a lot of customers.
