A portable stool for washermen and women in India
Conceived in India and designed in New York, this stool is designed for men and women in rural India who spend hours washing clothes without a seat to rest on. The motif has been inspired by a ‘moodha’- a traditional low stool in India.
P R O C E S S
Brief : The brief for this project was to design a nomadic stool for a specific user.
Process : My stool was designed for washermen and women in India who stand or squat to wash clothes all day. Having interacted with them since childhood, I understood their needs. The main design considerations were that it had to be lightweight and portable. My final design is made of plywood which is light and easy to be carried around and the seat is made by weaving rope, this particular rope is used in most traditional Indian stools which would make the production low cost, sustainable and accessible to a wider range of people.
