Design Brief : Designed for the 2018 Collab Student Design Competition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art which honors a world- renowned designer every year. The Award Honoree for this year was German Architect and Designer, Dieter Rams. The challenge was to design a small appliance for the home or office using four or more of Dieter Ram’s principles of good design that are- Good Design is Innovative, Honest, Thorough to the Last detail and Environmentally Friendly.
Process : Inspired by the design motifs of some of Dieter Rams’s work , this unique, slender steamer is easy to store and use. The initial idea was to make a clothing steamer and lint remover combined in one but due to it’s small shape, the idea is to have a full clothing steamer with a textured surface that would act as a lint remover. The current model only includes the steamer but future iterations would include a lint remover as part of the product. This is designed for the on- the- go people, people with smaller apartments without much space to store large steamers. User testing was conducted where three different sizes as well as edges were put to test and the feedback received was incorporated into the final design.
